A kitchen fire broke out early this afternoon on the 6th floor of an apartment building in the Hartenberg/Münchfeld neighborhood of Mainz. Fortunately, no one was left in the affected apartment when the fire department arrived; the resident had already evacuated to safety on her own. She was examined by emergency medical services as a precaution but did not require further treatment. A resident of a neighboring apartment was brought to safety by the fire department. After deploying a smoke barrier, a team wearing breathing apparatus entered the apartment. Several pieces of furniture were burning in the kitchen. Thanks to their targeted approach, the fire was brought under control very quickly. At the same time, a high-pressure fan was set up in front of the affected apartment, and neighboring apartments were checked for possible spread of the fire. The fire was contained to the extent observed. The mop-up operations proved labor-intensive, as the kitchen furniture had to be dismantled and partially removed from the apartment to rule out any potential hot spots. An additional team wearing breathing apparatus, as well as a turntable ladder, were deployed for this purpose. The apartment is currently uninhabitable. The operation was concluded after approximately two hours. The operation involved 24 personnel from both stations of the professional fire department with 5 vehicles, the emergency medical services with one ambulance, and the police with 2 patrol cars.

The National Warning Day was also scheduled to end in Mainz and Rheinhessen at 11:45 a.m. with the "all-clear" siren signal (a one-minute continuous high-pitched tone). In Mainz, as well as in the districts of Mainz-Bingen and Alzey-Worms, however, the sirens sounded once more with the “Public Warning” signal (a one-minute wailing tone that rises and falls in volume).

The Mainz Control Center had pre-scheduled the siren activations for its entire coverage area. During the activation at the start of the warning day at 11:00 a.m., supply errors were detected in two local jurisdictions, which were immediately corrected. This correction resulted in a configuration error in the overall pre-planning.

As a result, the incorrect siren signal was sounded in three local jurisdictions. At 11:50 a.m., the correct all-clear signal was subsequently triggered in the affected areas.

It should be emphasized that a faulty activation would be extremely unlikely in an actual emergency, as a drill simulating the activation procedures was conducted across the entire control center area on the warning day. An error occurred in this specific configuration. In an actual emergency, the sirens would be triggered directly via the emergency operations computer in the affected area.

The Mainz Fire Department was called to a room fire this evening around 6:15 p.m. in the Hartenberg-Münchfeld neighborhood.

Alert neighbors had notified the fire department via the 911 emergency line after noticing smoke, the smell of burning, and the alarm sound of a residential smoke detector in an apartment building.

Upon arrival, the emergency responders, wearing breathing apparatus, gained access to the apartment, which was already heavily filled with smoke. No one was left inside the apartment. The cause turned out to be food on a stove that had been left on when the occupants left the apartment. The pot was removed from the stove, and the smoke was cleared from the apartment using a fan.

The apartment remains habitable.

In addition to the fire department, the emergency medical services and the police were also involved in the operation.

An accident involving five vehicles and eight people caused traffic congestion during the morning rush hour on Friday on the A60 near Lerchenberg. Two people were taken to the hospital with injuries.

At around 7:45 a.m., the accident was reported via emergency services on the A60 between Mainz-Lerchenberg and the Mainz-Süd interchange. Immediately after the Lerchenberg on-ramp, a total of four passenger cars and one truck were involved in the accident. The accident scene, with vehicles that were in some cases severely damaged, stretched for about 150 meters across the right lane.

A total of eight occupants of the vehicles were examined and treated by the fire department and emergency medical services. One female driver and one male driver sustained injuries in the accident that were serious but not life-threatening, and they were taken to the hospital for further treatment.

Since large amounts of oil were leaking from the vehicles involved in the accident, the roadway had to be completely closed at times. Autobahn GmbH had to continue cleanup and cleaning work here until midday. The fire department assisted those affected and disconnected the batteries on two heavily damaged cars to eliminate any risk of fire.

The police are investigating the circumstances of the accident. According to initial witness statements, one or two consecutive rear-end collisions occurred as a result of an emergency stop caused by traffic conditions. The fire department was on site with four vehicles and 12 personnel. The emergency medical services attended to the injured with three ambulances and an emergency physician.

The emergency response operation was completed after just over an hour. Traffic backed up for several kilometers throughout the morning.

At around 11:45 a.m., the Mainz Fire Department was called to a fire at a pizzeria on the ground floor of a mixed-use residential and commercial building in the Neustadt district of Mainz. Upon arrival, flames were already shooting through a broken window into the backyard. The store was locked, so emergency responders had to force their way in.

A resident had attempted to contain the fire with a fire extinguisher before the fire department arrived, which temporarily slowed its spread. Fortunately, no one was injured in the fire.

The fire department deployed a total of three teams wearing breathing apparatus, who conducted operations both inside and outside the building. The fire was quickly brought under control using two C-hoses. At the same time, emergency personnel inspected the neighboring buildings, as heavy smoke had been visible at the start of the incident. However, there was no danger to adjacent buildings. An apartment on the first floor also had to be forced open for inspection. The apartment was slightly smoke-filled and was subsequently ventilated.

The mop-up operations proved to be extensive, as parts of the wood-and-clay ceiling as well as fire debris had to be removed and taken outside to extinguish any remaining embers. Subsequently, windows and doors were secured against unauthorized entry. Mainz Utilities shut off gas and electricity throughout the building; the water supply had to be interrupted only in the pizzeria.

The Criminal Investigation Unit (KDD) was on site and began investigating the cause of the fire. For this purpose, the ground floor was sealed off. The cause of the fire remains unclear and is the subject of a police investigation. No information is currently available regarding the extent of the damage. According to initial assessments, the building is only partially usable.

The preliminary end of the operation was reported around 2:45 p.m. A post-fire inspection by the fire department took place in the afternoon.

Twenty-three personnel from both stations of the Mainz Professional Fire Department were on the scene with a total of seven vehicles. In addition, the emergency medical services were on site with an ambulance, as were the police with several patrol cars. Basic fire protection for the city area was ensured in parallel by the day and special duty crews of the Professional Fire Department. During the operation, there were minor traffic restrictions in the vicinity of the incident site.
