Gutenberg City Mainz
Gutenberg belongs to Mainz like Mozart belongs to Salzburg. An excursion in Gutenberg's footsteps is, of course, the best way to visit our city. An absolute must-see is the World Museum of Printing, the Gutenberg Museum. You can virtually follow in the footsteps of the man of the millennium and his life here at Gutenberg.de.
Johannes Gutenberg is undisputedly Mainz's greatest son. With his invention of printing with movable type, he laid the foundation for modern media communication.
His outstanding importance is internationally recognized: in 1997, the renowned American magazine "Time Life" named Gutenberg's invention the most significant discovery of the past millennium. At the end of 1998, American journalists voted Gutenberg the most important personality of the second millennium in their book "1000 Years - 1000 People," awarding him the title "Man of the Millennium." In 2000, the people of Mainz and their guests celebrated the 600th birthday of the inventor of the millennium for twelve months.
