Climate protection and climate adaptation in Mainz

Mainz wants to become climate-neutral - with measures, participation and climate protection strategies for the city, administration and society by 2035 at the latest.

The consequences of global climate change are already clearly noticeable and measurable in Mainz. Recent summers have shown that extreme weather events such as heat waves and tropical nights, as well as heavy rainfall, are on the increase. These have an impact on human health and well-being, as well as on ecosystems and urban nature.

Climate protection and climate adaptation are considered central and complementary strategies for dealing with climate change.

Climate protection (opens in a new tab) aims to reduce emissions of climate-relevant greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) in order to minimize the progression of climate change. In addition to reducing emissions and creating greenhouse gas sinks, the expansion of renewable energy and heat supply is also being pursued.

At the same time, it is necessary to take precautions against the unavoidable consequences of climate change, such as drought, flooding, and extreme weather events. The goal of climate adaptation (opens in a new tab)is therefore to minimize risks, prevent damage, and adapt to the expected changes, some of which are already noticeable.
