Anyone who instructs individuals seeking to obtain a driver’s license must hold a driving instructor’s license. The driving instructor’s license is issued upon application for Class BE and additionally for Classes A, CE, and DE. The applicant is initially granted provisional authorization. After completing training and passing an examination, the driving instructor’s license is issued.

The driving instructor’s license may only be used in conjunction with a driving school license or within the framework of an employment or training relationship with the owner of a driving school.

• Identification card or passport with proof of residence
• Original driver’s license and a copy, or a certified copy of the driver’s license
• Certificate of Good Conduct (Type O)
• Resume in table format
• Medical and ophthalmological certificate. This must state that you are fit to work as a driving instructor. Depending on your personal circumstances, you may also be required to submit a medical certificate from a specialist or an assessment from an officially recognized assessment center, for example, in cases of conditions such as diabetes or hypertension, or if there are significant entries in the Central Traffic Register or the Federal Central Register.
• Proof of prior education: At least one completed vocational training program in a recognized trade following completion of secondary school or equivalent education.
• A certificate from an officially recognized driving instructor training center regarding the duration of the training completed.
• For the issuance of a Class BE driving instructor license, additionally a certificate from the training driving school regarding the duration of the training completed
• Possession of a Class BE driver’s license for at least three years. If the driving instructor’s license is to be issued additionally for Class A, CE, or DE, possession of a Class A2, CE, or D driver’s license for at least two years in each case
