As a German citizen, you are required to carry an identity card starting at age 16 if you do not have a valid passport.
Any theft of your identity card must be reported to the Citizens’ Office or the police. If you fail to do so, you are committing an administrative offense.
When you report the theft at the Citizens’ Office, you can apply for a new ID card at the same time.
Blocking the online ID function: If you report the theft to your local Citizens’ Office or the police, the online ID will be automatically blocked.
- You can also have the online ID function blocked yourself by phone.
- Blocking the function ensures that any attempt to misuse the online ID function is detected immediately. Once blocked, it is no longer possible to use the online ID function on your ID card or to have it scanned in person.
- You can only request that the signature function be blocked through the provider of your signature certificate.
You must generally report the theft of your ID card in person. Your online ID function will be automatically blocked once the report is received.
Reporting theft to the Citizens’ Office:
- Schedule an appointment at the Citizens’ Office. Please check the options available in your region.
- Your online ID function will be blocked immediately upon receipt of your report.
- If you cannot get a prompt appointment to report the theft at the Citizens’ Office, report the theft to a police station as soon as possible
Block your online ID function yourself via the hotline:
- Call the blocking hotline at 116 116. It is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- Enter the blocking password you received with your PIN letter using the phone keypad as soon as you are prompted to do so.
- Your online ID will be blocked immediately.
There are no notes or special features.
You must report the theft immediately.
Your report will be processed immediately.
